#rpgaday #rpgaday2019 - RPG a Day - "Ancient"

Image
Day 6 - ANCIENT It was supposed to be a longer post but it is my mother's birthday so we went to Capilano Suspension Bridge which is kind of in an ancient forest, so there. Sword and sorcery games and settings I like ancient cultures and ancient settings as opposed to pseudo-medievalisms of D&D and Warhammer. As it has become tradition here is a podcast recommendation on ancient cultures - Ancient World by Scott C. My favourite games and settings are as follows: Robert E. Howard's Conan: Adventures in an age undreamed of Relatively new game from Modiphius, based on writings by Robert E Howard more than his followers. Co-written by Jason Durall, based on a very cinematic 2d20 system, with a free quickstart available. Conan not the Governator Primeval Thule I know the least about this one but it is set in an ancient pre-history, 5e based, mostly human centric, magic is dark, twisted and evil. What more do you want? Sword & sorcery 5e ...

Khan of Khans - review

Image
Stay Golden It's the Gen Con weekend and now we know.  Two Gold ENnies for " Khan of Khans " (Best family product, Best RPG related product) and they are well deserved. *le box Khaaan!  Do not pay any attention to the BGG score - the bitterness comes from people expecting a deep strategy or tactical game. This is not that at all. Khans is a simple push-your-luck family game with some tactics derived from the memory element of the game. Caaards! The game was designed by that German guy that pops up everywhere when board games are mentioned - Reiner Knizia .  Mechanically there are 10 piles of cards representing different locations in Glorantha's Dragon Pass (you may see a pattern developing here ). On your turn you draw a card ...

RuneQuest: Roleplaying in Glorantha quick start - review

Skip this intro Growing up in Poland everyone was either playing Warhammer or some homebrew. Or most likely a  WFRP's Old World  run on mechanics homebrewed beyond any recognition. The only info about Glorantha and RuneQuest  we had back then was that it's that weird system with ducks. It was sort of hinted in Magia i Miecz  ("Magic & Sword") the only serious magazine we had that the classic RuneQuest was one of the founding systems of the hobby in the before times . In the edgy 90s that was not "dark" or "mature" or "realistic" enough. But now that I'm reading of how Glorantha works, it turns out that it is what I was always looking for in an RPG setting.  I watched the game on YouTube being run by Jeff Richards mostly because I follow the WebDM team. (they were using pre-gens from the quick start but a different adventure) Quick start The quick start booklet has been released for Free RPG Day 2017  as a previ...
